An Explanation of Member Blogs

Submitted by jack sprat on 15 August, 2008 - 11:00.

Greypath members can write personal blog entries (web logs) that are stored in the Greypath databases.

When you are logged in as a member you can view all your blog entries by clicking the "my blog" item in the left hand menu. Other members are also able to view your entries using links from various parts of the Greypath website. For example, if you post an entry to the "Bookworm" part of the site, (see under the top of home page, FORUM tab), at the bottom of your posting will be a link to your blog and all its entries.

At present, your blog entries can be put into one of four categories: the default is "<none>", then there is "General", "Bugle Blog" and "The Bookworm". You select the appropriate category when writing a blog entry.

Which category should you use?

Select "General" if you do not want your blog entry to go into either the "Bugle Blog" or the "Bookworm". Other members will be able to see your blog entry (and other members' blog entries) if they click the "Members Blogs" item in the left navigation menu.

Select "Bugle Blog" is your blog entry is about an interesting incident that happened during your day - something that other Greypath members would find interesting.

Select "The Bookworm" for entries about books.

You can leave the category as "<none>" if you like - there are no menu items that point to such entries but other members _can_ link to them from the "Bugle Blog" or "The Bookworm" pages.

Here are links to the pages for categorised blog entries:

You can comment on other members' blogs, and they can comment on yours. Good comments are a way to enliven the site and get to know other people better.

Sustainability in action

Submitted by jack sprat on 31 October, 2008 - 07:36.

Went to a writing (newsletters) workshop yesterday in Daylesford Vic. This is spa and mineral springs country - a great destination for Melbourne folk on weekends.

Met interesting people at the workshop - all involved in their communities in various ways.

"Maureen" writes the newsletter for Hepburn REA  (Renewable Energy Association). That group has successfully organised a "wind park" (two turbines) for their community. They've got past all the hurdles and handed over the project to a "for-profit" cooperative that will implement and manage the wind park. The two turbines will add 4 Megawatts of wind-generated electricity to the grid, meaning 4 Megawatts less needs to be generated from brown coal. That's power for 2000 homes, 14,000 tonnes less of CO2 in the atmosphere.each year.

At around $10 million, this is a big community project, but these folk got their act together and it's all happening - note that less than a tenth of the cost will be spent by government (or rather us taxpayers) on this project, the rest by private investors including a lot of local residents.

You can view the whole story at www.hrea.org.au .

And yes, I did learn a bit about writing newsletters too!

A bit of a chuckle. Thursday Next

Submitted by jack sprat on 12 March, 2008 - 12:20.

If you like a bit of sci-fi (time travel paradoxes), AND English literature (but aren't too precious about it), AND don't mind a few puns (well, lots of puns), then you might like the Thursday Next novels of Jasper Fforde (website http://www.jasperfforde.com).

Just suppose the Crimean War hadn't ended in 1856, suppose the British forces were bogged down in a stalemate that had lasted until the present day, suppose there was a government department in England named "The Toast Marketing Board". Suppose Wales was a Socialist Republic. And suppose Thomas Hardy's novels were supposed to be humorous!  If you can suppose all this you might enjoy Fforde's novels.

Haven't spotted them at the local library yet, but still hoping.

Welcome Book Lovers!

Submitted by jack sprat on 5 March, 2008 - 12:47.

This is the latest nook we have opened up on the Greypath website. The "Bookworm" is a spot where you can post your thoughts about particular books, genres, or writing in general. Happy reading (and writing)!

Polishing the Bugle

Submitted by jack sprat on 31 January, 2008 - 11:45.

Dear members:  The Bugle Blog is really starting to shine thanks to your interesting postings. Some members have asked about the length of their postings and what sort of stories we're after. So we've prepared some guidelines that can be accessed by a link in the masthead (above). Because we don't want to stifle your creativity we have set up some categories for blog entries. You will need to classify an entry as belonging to the "Bugle Blog" in order for it to appear on this page. When you want to create a blog entry that doesn't fit the Bugle Blog "style" go right ahead... but classify it as a "General" blog entry so it doesn't appear on this page. Other members can still view your efforts by clicking on the blog link at the end of each entry on this page...see the example image here.blog entry links

Hope this makes sense - please comment if I'm being obtuse or geekish!
